As there is so little repertoire for Laptop Orchestras, the LoLs generate most of the music that is performed by the ensemble. This means developing laptop based instruments from sound synthesis and processing algorithms, physical interfaces (like joysticks and video tracking), and mappings from controls to musical parameters to create an electronic instrument. Once this done, music is composed implementing the unique and engaging features of these instruments. Sometimes it is traditionally notated, while others lend themselves to more experimental forms of improvisation, conducted improv., game based structure, or even dictated by social media.
Because of this, a wide range of research projects, experimental instruments, and new approaches to music and composition are being explored. These pages shall contain some of our current work.
